Expertise
Among its products and expertise, the ABEILLON company has developed and produced a whole range of table reading lamps used in surface ships and submarines as well as in land intervention vehicles operating in military operations.
To meet the requirements of certain customers, and depending on the configuration of the table reading lamp, validation tests were carried out to assess the conformity of the product with respect to standards representative of the intended or frequently requested application cases.
Taking the ABEILLON Bi-colour dimmable table reading lamp as an example, tests were carried out according to the standards for electrical connections and materials:
- MIL-STD-810F: This standard describes levels of requirements for mechanical strength and rainwater tightness
- MIL-STD-461 E v 1999: This standard describes emission and radio wave performance requirements
- MIL-STD-1275: This standard describes levels of requirements to ensure the compatibility of the lamp with the electrical power distribution system on military ground vehicle platforms
Tabletop reading lamp compliance
The evaluation of conformity in terms of rainwater tightness was subjected to water projection tests following predefined values of flow rate, distance, ejection nozzle size, water temperature and watering duration.
The mechanical strength tests consisted of subjecting the lamp to vibrations for a period of 40 minutes and shocks in the three directions X, Y, Z. These mechanical tests were carried out using a vibrating table equipped with accelerometers and its control system.
After conducting tests to verify the quality of the electrical connection between the ground plane and the various constituent mechanical elements, the following tests were carried out:
- Conduction of radio waves emitted by the power cables, under normal lamp operation. These tests involved current and voltage measurements related to radio wave conduction.
- Radio wave radiation emanating from the lamp during its normal operation. These tests involved measuring the magnetic fields emitted at various positions and locations within the lamp.
- Radio wave radiation from the lamp, under different operating modes. These tests involved measurements of emitted electric fields, along the vertical and horizontal axes of lamp polarization and over an appropriate frequency range.
Other tests were carried out to ensure the lamp's compatibility with the electrical power distribution system (on military ground vehicle platforms). These tests covered:

Transient disturbances : voltage spikes
- Voltage spikes exported into the equipment: the lamp must operate without degradation or damage when subjected to voltage spikes (described in MIL-STD1275 §5.4.2.3)
- Voltage peaks exported from the equipment: during lamp switching operation (start-up or shutdown), the voltage must remain within the limits of the model defined in the standard
Transient disturbances : overvoltages
- Imported overvoltages in the equipment: the lamp must operate without degradation or damage when subjected to the overvoltages described in the standard.
- Overvoltages exported by the equipment: during lamp switching operation (start or stop), the voltage must remain within the limits of the model defined in the standard.
All the tests briefly described above were carried out by a specialized laboratory independent of the ABEILLONcompany. All physical measurements were the subject of a detailed report including the measurement conditions, the equipment used, the detailed results in the form of tables or graphs, as well as the conclusions.
